The first day was mighty cold, but we loved pulling out our winter coats.
We made edible playdough. The kids absolutely Loved it - simply mix equal parts powdered milk, peanut butter, and honey. I'd go light on the honey. We used this as an after-dinner craft time/dessert time. We wrote our names in playdough, made a pirate man - oh the creative juices were flowing.
Can you say YUMMY?
We took a walk at least once a day. Our first long walk was an experience that I must describe. We walked several blocks down and found ourselves upon a meadow lining behind a row of houses. Then, peeking between two homes we saw a wolf perched... staring at us... then another wolf joined him... two wolves staring at us... then we realized there was an entire pack of wolves searching for their breakfast! We slowly crept back up along the street toward our cabin. We heard later in the week that there was a pack of wolves and baby wolves and you typically stay away during the spring time when they are more protective with their babies. Needless to say, our walks remained closer to home and in the other direction!
Daytime Outing:
In the summer, my family often frequents Kiva Beach. However, visiting the lake so early in the year, we found many things were "closed for the season". It took a little more time, but an adventure we found. After hiking through the historic buildings, we came upon Kiva beach for an afternoon picnic, digging in the sand, and throwing rocks into the lake.
Finding blue jays during our picnic lunch.
Another outing: Tube World (yes, that really is the name) for the kids' first real snow experience. We lucked out with the 70 degree weather (hence no winter coat). Ella had a blast!!! She even put her arms up roller-coaster-style for the last few runs.
Daddy worked so hard to create lifelong memories.
What we didn't realize was that without the winter coat, his hands were more exposed to the sun. Do you see the sunburn on his wrists??? He is so so so sensitive to the sun. I reapplied sunscreen on his face many times, but never thought to reapply on his hands. New Best Practice: Sunscreen EVERYWHERE.
More digging back at the house. In fact, if we weren't out for a walk, we were digging in the front yard where the snow remained and the pinecones awaited collecting.
